Suspected Hantavirus Outbreak on Cruise Ship Results in Three Deaths

A suspected hantavirus outbreak aboard the Dutch-flagged cruise ship MV Hondius has resulted in three deaths and several illnesses among passengers and crew. The vessel, carrying 147 individuals from 23 countries, is currently anchored off the coast of Cape Verde after being denied docking due to health concerns.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has confirmed two cases of hantavirus infection and is investigating five additional suspected cases. Among the deceased are a Dutch couple and a German passenger. A British national remains in critical condition in a South African hospital.

Hantavirus is a rare disease primarily transmitted through contact with infected rodent excreta. While human-to-human transmission is uncommon, certain strains have been known to spread through close contact. The WHO is coordinating international efforts for medical evacuation, case isolation, and further laboratory investigations.

The MV Hondius departed from Ushuaia, Argentina, on April 1, 2026, for a 46-day voyage, including stops in Antarctica and the South Atlantic islands. The source of the outbreak remains under investigation, with authorities considering potential exposure during the ship's itinerary.

Cape Verdean authorities have yet to permit disembarkation, and the ship's operator, Oceanwide Expeditions, is exploring alternative ports, including the Canary Islands, for potential docking. Passengers and crew are currently under strict isolation measures, with ongoing medical monitoring and support.
