Suspected Hantavirus Outbreak on Cruise Ship Results in Three Deaths

A suspected outbreak of hantavirus aboard the MV Hondius, a Dutch-operated cruise ship, has resulted in three deaths and several illnesses among passengers and crew. The vessel, carrying approximately 150 individuals, is currently anchored off the coast of Cape Verde, where local authorities have denied docking to prevent potential public health risks.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has confirmed one case of hantavirus and is investigating five additional suspected cases. One patient is in intensive care in South Africa, while two crew members onboard require urgent medical attention.

Hantavirus is a rare, rodent-borne disease that can cause severe respiratory issues. Transmission typically occurs through contact with infected rodent excreta. The WHO is coordinating with member states and the ship's operators to facilitate medical evacuations and conduct a comprehensive public health risk assessment.

The MV Hondius had departed from Argentina three weeks prior, with planned stops including Antarctica and the Canary Islands. The source of the outbreak remains under investigation, with authorities emphasizing that the risk to the general public is currently low.
