Spirit Airlines has ceased operations effective immediately, citing financial difficulties exacerbated by rising fuel costs and unsuccessful bailout negotiations.
Spirit Airlines has announced an immediate cessation of operations, canceling all flights and discontinuing customer service. The airline stated, "It is with great disappointment that on May 2, 2026, Spirit Airlines started an orderly wind-down of our operations, effective immediately."
The decision follows unsuccessful negotiations for a $500 million federal bailout and mounting financial pressures, including rising fuel costs linked to the ongoing conflict in Iran.
Founded in 1992, Spirit Airlines was known for its ultra-low-cost model, offering budget-friendly fares by charging for additional services. The airline's closure leaves approximately 17,000 employees without jobs and has stranded numerous passengers.
The U.S. Department of Transportation has arranged limited assistance for affected travelers, including $200 one-way tickets from other major airlines.
