Spirit Airlines Ceases Operations Amid Financial Struggles

Spirit Airlines announced early Saturday that it has ceased operations effective immediately, canceling all flights and discontinuing customer service. The decision follows unsuccessful negotiations for a $500 million federal bailout and mounting financial challenges, including two bankruptcy filings since 2024. The airline cited a significant increase in oil prices and other pressures as factors that have "significantly impacted" its financial outlook.

President Donald Trump had indicated the possibility of a bailout, stating, "If we can do it, we'll do it but only if it's a good deal." However, no agreement was reached, leading to the airline's shutdown.

Spirit Airlines, known for its ultra-low-cost model, employed approximately 17,000 people and served over 40 cities in the U.S. and international destinations in Central and South America. The cessation of operations marks the first major U.S. airline shutdown in decades and is expected to impact airfares and competition in the industry.

Passengers with existing bookings are advised to seek refunds through credit card companies or travel insurance providers, as customer service is no longer available.
