Putin Signals Ukraine Conflict Nearing Conclusion Amid Ceasefire Violations
Russian President Vladimir Putin suggests the Ukraine war is nearing its end, while both Russia and Ukraine accuse each other of violating a recent ceasefire.
Russian President Vladimir Putin has indicated that the conflict in Ukraine may be approaching its conclusion. Speaking to reporters, Putin stated, "I think that the matter is coming to an end," referring to the ongoing war, which has become Europe's deadliest conflict since World War II. He expressed willingness to negotiate new security arrangements for Europe, suggesting former German Chancellor Gerhard Schröder as a preferred interlocutor.
These remarks followed a scaled-back Victory Day parade in Moscow, where Putin criticized Western support for Ukraine. He accused the West of escalating tensions with Russia and noted that their expectations of Russia's defeat had not materialized. Putin also reiterated his readiness to meet Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in a third country, but only after all conditions for a potential peace agreement were settled.
The recent ceasefire, brokered by U.S. President Donald Trump, was intended to last from May 9 to May 11, coinciding with Russia's Victory Day celebrations. However, both sides have accused each other of violations. The Russian Defense Ministry reported that Ukrainian forces had committed nearly 9,000 violations since the ceasefire began, including drone and artillery strikes. Conversely, Ukrainian President Zelenskyy stated that Russian forces had committed 1,820 violations, including shelling and airstrikes.
The Victory Day parade in Moscow was notably subdued, lacking military hardware for the first time in nearly two decades and attended by only a handful of foreign dignitaries. This reduction was attributed to operational concerns and security threats. Analysts interpret the scaled-down event and increased internet restrictions as signs of the Kremlin's vulnerability amid ongoing conflict and internal pressures.
The war, now in its fifth year, has resulted in hundreds of thousands of deaths and significant destruction across Ukraine. Despite the recent ceasefire, both nations continue to exchange accusations of violations, underscoring the challenges in achieving a lasting peace.
