Jury Dismisses Elon Musk's Lawsuit Against OpenAI Due to Statute of Limitations

Summary

A California jury unanimously ruled that Elon Musk's lawsuit against OpenAI was filed beyond the legal time limit, effectively dismissing his claims.

A federal jury in Oakland, California, has unanimously dismissed Elon Musk's lawsuit against OpenAI, its CEO Sam Altman, co-founder Greg Brockman, and Microsoft. The jury concluded that Musk filed his claims beyond the statute of limitations, rendering them ineligible for consideration.

Musk had alleged that OpenAI deviated from its original nonprofit mission by establishing a for-profit entity, thereby enriching its executives and partners, including Microsoft. He sought up to $134 billion in damages and the removal of Altman and Brockman from their positions.

The trial, which spanned three weeks, featured testimonies from prominent figures in the tech industry, including Musk and Altman. The jury deliberated for less than two hours before reaching their verdict.

Following the verdict, Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers accepted the jury's advisory decision, effectively ending the case. Musk's lead counsel, Marc Toberoff, indicated plans to appeal the decision.

This ruling removes a significant legal obstacle for OpenAI as it prepares for a potential initial public offering (IPO).
