A gunman killed six people in Kyiv before being shot dead by police after taking hostages in a supermarket.
A gunman opened fire in Kyiv's Holosiivskyi district on Saturday, killing six people and injuring at least 14 others before being shot dead by police. The 58-year-old attacker, identified as Dmytro Vasylchenkov, began by setting fire to his apartment before shooting at civilians on the street, resulting in four fatalities. He then entered a supermarket, where he took hostages and killed a fifth person. A sixth victim later died in the hospital. Police negotiators attempted to communicate with Vasylchenkov for approximately 40 minutes without success. Special forces subsequently stormed the supermarket, killing the gunman and rescuing the remaining hostages. The Security Service of Ukraine is investigating the incident as an act of terrorism. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that Vasylchenkov was born in Russia and had a prior criminal history. The motive for the attack remains under investigation.
