Bipartisan Calls for Expulsion of Reps. Swalwell and Gonzales Amid Misconduct Allegations
Members of Congress from both parties are urging the expulsion of Representatives Eric Swalwell and Tony Gonzales following serious allegations of sexual misconduct.
Members of Congress from both parties are calling for the expulsion of Representatives Eric Swalwell (D-CA) and Tony Gonzales (R-TX) following serious allegations of sexual misconduct.
Swalwell faces multiple accusations, including sexual assault and rape, from former staffers. One former aide alleges that in 2024, while she was intoxicated, Swalwell raped her. The Manhattan District Attorney's Office has initiated an investigation into these claims. Swalwell has denied all allegations, describing them as "absolutely false."
Gonzales has admitted to an extramarital affair with a staffer, Regina Ann Santos-Aviles, who later died by suicide. The House Ethics Committee has launched an investigation into whether Gonzales engaged in sexual misconduct and dispensed special favors. Gonzales has acknowledged the affair, calling it a "mistake," and stated that he has sought forgiveness.
Representative Anna Paulina Luna (R-FL) announced plans to introduce resolutions to expel both Swalwell and Gonzales. Representative Ro Khanna (D-CA) commented on Swalwell's situation, stating, "What he did is sick and disgusting. There need to be consequences to that." Representative Byron Donalds (R-FL) expressed support for expelling both members, emphasizing that such allegations "demean the integrity of Congress."
The House Ethics Committee is expected to review the allegations against both representatives, with potential expulsion votes forthcoming.
