A Hawaii anesthesiologist has been convicted of attempted manslaughter for attacking his wife during a cliffside hike in Honolulu. A Honolulu jury found 47-year-old Gerhardt Konig guilty of attempted manslaughter based on extreme mental or emotional disturbance, a charge carrying a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison. Sentencing is scheduled for August 13.
Prosecutors alleged that in March 2025, during a weekend trip to Honolulu for his wife's birthday, Konig attempted to push his wife, Arielle Konig, off a cliff on the Pali Puka Trail. When unsuccessful, he allegedly tried to stab her with a syringe and struck her with a rock. The attack was interrupted by two hikers who heard her cries for help.
Konig testified that his wife initiated the physical altercation by hitting him with a rock, and he acted in self-defense. His attorney, Thomas Otake, stated plans to appeal the verdict, expressing gratitude that the jury did not convict Konig of attempted murder, which would have resulted in a life sentence.
The trial, which began nearly a year after the incident, revealed details of the couple's troubled marriage, including allegations of infidelity. Arielle Konig has since filed for divorce.
