Vice President Vance Visits Hungary to Support Prime Minister Orbán Ahead of Election
U.S. Vice President JD Vance visits Hungary to meet with Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, aiming to bolster U.S.-Hungary relations and support Orbán's re-election bid amid upcoming parliamentary elections.
U.S. Vice President JD Vance arrived in Budapest on Tuesday for a two-day visit, during which he is scheduled to meet with Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán. The visit comes just days before Hungary's parliamentary elections set for April 12, where Orbán faces a significant challenge from the opposition Tisza Party, led by Péter Magyar.
According to a statement from the White House, Vance's visit aims to "deliver remarks on the rich partnership between the United States and Hungary." However, the timing of the trip has led analysts to interpret it as a show of support for Orbán, a close ally of President Donald Trump.
Recent polls indicate that the Tisza Party holds a lead over Orbán's Fidesz party, with Tisza garnering 56% support among decided voters compared to Fidesz's 37%.
During his visit, Vance is expected to attend a campaign rally with Orbán, further signaling the U.S. administration's backing of the incumbent prime minister.
The Hungarian parliamentary elections are scheduled for April 12, 2026, with all 199 seats in the National Assembly up for election.
