Limerick Doctor Sentenced to Eight Years for Rape and Sexual Assault of Nurse

Résumé

Dr. Louay Kila received an eight-year prison sentence for raping and sexually assaulting a nurse colleague in Limerick.

Dr. Louay Kila, a 31-year-old Moroccan national and former registrar at University Hospital Limerick (UHL), has been sentenced to eight years in prison for the rape and sexual assault of a nurse colleague. The offenses occurred on March 2, 2024, following a night out in Limerick city.

The court heard that after socializing with friends, the victim fell asleep on a couch in an apartment. She awoke to find Kila penetrating her and, despite her repeated pleas for him to stop, he continued the assault.

In her victim impact statement, the nurse expressed the profound effect the assault had on her life and career, stating she felt "physically sick" returning to work at UHL, where Kila continued to practice for a time. She eventually transferred to a different healthcare setting to avoid contact with him.

Kila was arrested on March 26, 2024, and was suspended from the medical register in March 2025. He contested the charges but was found guilty by a unanimous jury verdict after a four-day trial.

During sentencing, Judge Sean Gillane acknowledged the victim's resilience and the significant impact on her career and personal life. He imposed an eight-year sentence for rape and a concurrent four-year sentence for sexual assault.
