Artemis II Crew Celebrates Easter En Route to Lunar Flyby

Summary

The Artemis II astronauts observed Easter Sunday with onboard festivities and prepared for their upcoming lunar flyby.

As the Artemis II crew approached the Moon, they observed Easter Sunday with onboard celebrations and continued mission preparations. Commander Reid Wiseman, Pilot Victor Glover, and Mission Specialist Christina Koch presented astronaut wings to Canadian Space Agency astronaut Jeremy Hansen, marking his first spaceflight. Koch conveyed Easter greetings to flight controllers, noting the significance of the season across various cultures and religions. She shared a personal tradition of hiding confetti eggs, adapted aboard the spacecraft with dehydrated scrambled eggs.

The crew also conducted tests of the new Artemis pressure suits, assessing their functionality in the spacecraft's environment. As of Sunday, the Orion spacecraft was approximately 76,362 nautical miles from the Moon and 168,000 miles from Earth. The mission is on track for a lunar flyby on Monday, April 6, during which the crew will pass within about 4,070 miles of the lunar surface.

This flyby aims to test the Orion spacecraft's systems and gather scientific observations of the Moon's far side, providing valuable data for future lunar missions.
