Artemis II Astronauts Arrive at Kennedy Space Center for Upcoming Lunar Mission

Summary

The four-member crew of NASA's Artemis II mission has arrived at Kennedy Space Center, preparing for the first crewed lunar flyby in over five decades.

The crew of NASA's Artemis II mission has arrived at Kennedy Space Center in Florida, marking a significant step toward the first crewed lunar flyby since 1972. Commander Reid Wiseman, Pilot Victor Glover, Mission Specialist Christina Koch, and Canadian Space Agency astronaut Jeremy Hansen touched down in training jets from Houston.

Scheduled for launch as early as April 1, 2026, the 10-day mission will see the astronauts aboard the Orion spacecraft, propelled by the Space Launch System (SLS) rocket, on a journey around the Moon and back to Earth. This mission aims to test Orion's life-support systems and serves as a precursor to future lunar landings planned under NASA's Artemis program.

The Artemis II crew has been in quarantine since March 20 to ensure their health ahead of the mission. The SLS rocket was rolled out to Launch Complex 39B on March 20, following a series of prelaunch tests and maintenance. The launch window extends through April 6, with backup opportunities in late April and early May, should delays occur.

Artemis II represents a pivotal moment in NASA's efforts to establish a sustained human presence on the Moon. Future missions, including Artemis III and IV, are planned to demonstrate lunar landings and lay the groundwork for long-term exploration.
