NASA Targets April 1 for Artemis II Lunar Mission Launch

NASA has scheduled the Artemis II mission for April 1, 2026, aiming to send four astronauts on a 10-day journey around the Moon and back. This marks the first crewed lunar mission since the Apollo program ended in 1972. The mission will launch from Kennedy Space Center in Florida aboard the Space Launch System (SLS) rocket, carrying the Orion spacecraft.

The Artemis II crew comprises NASA astronauts Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, and Christina Koch, along with Canadian Space Agency astronaut Jeremy Hansen. Their mission will involve a lunar flyby without landing, testing critical systems integral to future Moon landings, such as deep space life-support, navigation, and communication.

The launch has faced several delays due to technical issues, including a helium leak and fuel system problems discovered during testing. Ground crews recently returned the SLS rocket and Orion spacecraft to the Vehicle Assembly Building to complete repairs. Lori Glaze, acting associate administrator for Exploration Systems Development Mission Directorate, stated, "I am comfortable and the agency is comfortable with targeting April 1 as our first opportunity, just keep in mind we still have work to go."

Artemis II is a pivotal step in NASA's Artemis program, which aims to establish a sustainable human presence on the Moon and eventually send humans to Mars. The mission will serve as a critical test of the systems and procedures necessary for future lunar landings.

NASA officials have confirmed that teams will not conduct another "wet dress rehearsal," a full pre-launch fueling and countdown test, once the rocket returns to the launchpad, indicating confidence in the current state of the vehicle and its systems.
