Ghana's Security Services Recruitment: 5,000 Positions Amid Over 500,000 Applicants

Summary

Interior Minister Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak announces that only 5,000 applicants will be recruited into Ghana's security services, despite over 500,000 applications, due to fiscal constraints.

Interior Minister Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak has announced that, despite receiving over 500,000 applications, only 5,000 individuals will be recruited into Ghana's security services in the current phase. The overwhelming number of applicants includes approximately 75,000 university graduates and more than 330,000 senior high school leavers.

Addressing journalists on Wednesday, March 11, 2026, the minister highlighted the government's fiscal limitations, stating that the current economic situation prevents the employment of all qualified candidates. He emphasized that, despite many applicants potentially passing the medical screening, the available vacancies across the security agencies remain limited.

Mr. Mohammed-Mubarak appealed to applicants who may not be selected to remain hopeful, noting that the government plans to retain the details of qualified candidates for future recruitment. He revealed that another recruitment exercise is expected in 2026 after Ghana completes its current program with the International Monetary Fund.

The minister assured that the government remains committed to creating opportunities for young people and will work towards recruiting more qualified applicants into the security services once the country's fiscal space improves.
