Israel Intensifies Strikes on Hezbollah Amid Escalating Tensions

Résumé

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has ordered increased military operations against Hezbollah in Lebanon following recent drone attacks on Israeli forces.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced on Monday an escalation of military operations targeting Hezbollah positions in Lebanon. This decision follows a series of drone attacks by Hezbollah on Israeli forces stationed in southern Lebanon and northern Israel. Netanyahu stated, "We will intensify our blows, increase our firepower, and we will crush them."

The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) reported conducting airstrikes on Hezbollah sites in the Bekaa Valley and other regions within Lebanon. These actions are part of a broader strategy to counter Hezbollah's use of fiber-optic drones, a technology that has been increasingly employed against Israeli targets in recent weeks.

IDF Chief of Staff Lt.-Gen. Eyal Zamir, after assessing the situation with the 401st Brigade in northern Israel, advocated for targeting buildings in Beirut in response to the drone attacks. Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich echoed this sentiment, suggesting that for every explosive drone launched by Hezbollah, ten buildings in Beirut should be targeted.

A U.S. State Department official commented on the situation, noting that Hezbollah has ignored repeated requests to cease its attacks on Israel. The official emphasized that Israel cannot be expected to passively absorb such assaults on its forces and civilians.

The recent escalation has led to civilian displacement in Beirut's southern suburbs, with many residents fleeing the area following the intensified airstrikes.

Despite a U.S.-brokered ceasefire that took effect on April 17, hostilities have persisted. Both Israeli and Lebanese officials are scheduled to meet at the Pentagon to discuss the fragile ceasefire and Hezbollah's disarmament.
