Israeli Airstrikes in Lebanon Escalate Tensions Amid Civilian Casualties

Resumen

Israeli airstrikes targeting Hezbollah positions in Lebanon have resulted in civilian casualties, including the death of a Lebanese Forces official, intensifying domestic criticism of Hezbollah's role in the conflict.

Israeli airstrikes targeted Hezbollah positions in Beirut and southern Lebanon on Monday, leading to significant civilian casualties and escalating domestic criticism of the Iran-backed group.

In the Jnah neighborhood of Beirut, an Israeli airstrike resulted in the deaths of at least five people and injured 21 others, according to Lebanon's Health Ministry. The area, known for its residential and commercial spaces, suffered significant damage and fires.

In Ain Saadeh, a predominantly Christian town east of Beirut, an Israeli strike on an apartment building killed three civilians, including Pierre Mouawad, a local official from the Lebanese Forces party, and his wife. The Israeli military stated that the strike targeted a Hezbollah operative who had left the building shortly before the attack.

The Lebanese Health Ministry reported that since March 2, at least 1,497 people have been killed and 4,639 injured due to the ongoing conflict, with more than one million displaced.

The Lebanese Forces party criticized Hezbollah for its role in the conflict, with parliamentarian Razi El Hage stating, "We are paying a heavy price for a war into which we have been dragged by the lawless organization Hezbollah."

The Israeli military has announced plans to establish a demilitarized "security zone" in southern Lebanon up to the Litani River, aiming to remove the threat posed by Hezbollah. Defense Minister Israel Katz instructed the military to demolish buildings in Lebanese villages close to the Israeli border to prevent their use by Hezbollah for attacks.

Hezbollah has continued to launch rocket and drone attacks on Israeli targets, with the Israeli military reporting hundreds of rockets fired daily. The majority of these attacks have targeted Israeli forces operating in southern Lebanon, with a smaller number crossing into Israeli territory.

The ongoing conflict has led to significant civilian casualties and displacement, with both sides facing international calls for de-escalation and a return to negotiations.
