Oil Prices Surge Amid US-Iran Clashes in Strait of Hormuz

Oil prices experienced a significant increase after military confrontations between the United States and Iran in the Strait of Hormuz, a vital passage for global oil shipments. Brent crude futures rose by as much as 7.5% during a volatile trading session on Thursday, reaching a high of $103.70 per barrel before settling at $101.12 as of 03:00 GMT on Friday.

The escalation occurred when Iranian forces launched missiles and drones targeting three U.S. Navy destroyers transiting the strait. The U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) reported that American defenses intercepted the attacks without sustaining damage and responded with strikes on Iranian military targets. CENTCOM stated that the U.S. response was provoked by Iran's unprovoked attacks, emphasizing that U.S. defenses intercepted the Iranian assaults without sustaining damage.

Iran's Khatam al-Anbiya Central Headquarters accused the U.S. of violating the ceasefire by attacking an Iranian oil tanker and other vessels in the vicinity of the waterway. The Iranian military also alleged that the U.S. targeted civilian areas, including Qeshm Island.

Despite the clashes, U.S. President Donald Trump indicated that the ceasefire remained in effect, while Iran's state-run Press TV reported that the situation had returned to normal. However, shipping in the Strait of Hormuz has been nearly halted since late February due to the threat of Iranian attacks on oil tankers, contributing to a 40% increase in Brent crude prices compared to pre-war levels.

The heightened tensions have also impacted global markets. Asian stock markets opened lower on Friday, with Japan's Nikkei 225, South Korea's KOSPI, and Hong Kong's Hang Seng Index each falling more than 1%. On Wall Street, the S&P 500 declined by approximately 0.4% after reaching an all-time high the previous day.
