Middle East Conflict Triggers Global Energy Crisis and Economic Disruptions

The ongoing Middle East conflict has led to the effective closure of the Strait of Hormuz, a critical passage for approximately 20% of the world's oil and liquefied natural gas (LNG). This disruption has resulted in a significant global energy crisis, with oil prices surging over 50% to exceed $110 per barrel since the conflict began.

The International Energy Agency (IEA) has described the situation as the "greatest global energy security challenge in history," surpassing the 1973 Arab oil embargo. The closure has also led to a sharp decline in maritime transit, with tanker traffic dropping to nearly zero, affecting about 20% of the world's daily oil supply and significant volumes of LNG.

In response to the crisis, various countries have implemented measures to conserve energy. For instance, Thailand ordered civil servants to suspend overseas trips and use stairs instead of elevators, while Bangladesh closed its universities. Sri Lanka imposed fuel rationing, China banned refined fuel exports, and the U.K. government considered cutting speed limits to save fuel.

The conflict has also severely disrupted fertilizer markets, as about a third of global trade in fertilizers typically passes through the Strait of Hormuz and is now stuck. Prices for nitrogen-based products like urea have risen 30% to 40% since the conflict began, threatening global food supplies.

The situation remains critical, with ongoing military actions targeting energy infrastructure in the region. The IEA has called for an immediate stop to the targeting of energy facilities and for the resumption of cargo traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, emphasizing the importance of these resources to global stability.
