The United States has authorized the release of 172 million barrels from its Strategic Petroleum Reserve (SPR) in response to escalating oil prices driven by ongoing conflicts in the Middle East. Energy Secretary Chris Wright announced that this release is part of a coordinated effort by the International Energy Agency (IEA), which has agreed to collectively release 400 million barrels from global reserves.
The release is scheduled to begin next week and is expected to take approximately 120 days to complete. President Donald Trump stated that the United States plans to replenish the SPR with approximately 200 million barrels within the next year.
This decision comes amid heightened tensions in the Middle East, where Iranian attacks on shipping lanes and energy infrastructure have disrupted global oil supplies. Notably, Iraq has halted operations at its oil ports following an attack on a tanker in its territorial waters.
Despite these measures, oil prices have continued to rise, with Brent crude surpassing $100 per barrel. The IEA's executive director, Fatih Birol, emphasized that while the reserve release aims to alleviate immediate market disruptions, the resumption of transit through the Strait of Hormuz is crucial for stabilizing global oil and gas flows.
