IEA to Release 400 Million Barrels from Reserves Amid Middle East Conflict

Summary

The International Energy Agency announces a record release of 400 million barrels of oil to stabilize markets affected by the US-Israeli conflict with Iran.

The International Energy Agency (IEA) has unanimously agreed to release 400 million barrels of oil from its emergency reserves, marking the largest coordinated release in the agency's history. This decision aims to address significant disruptions in global oil markets resulting from the ongoing US-Israeli conflict with Iran.

IEA Executive Director Fatih Birol stated, :

"The oil market challenges we are facing are unprecedented in scale, therefore I am very glad that IEA Member countries have responded with an emergency collective action of unprecedented size."

The conflict has severely impacted oil shipments through the Strait of Hormuz, a critical passage for approximately 20% of the world's oil supply. The near-total closure of this strait has led to a significant reduction in global oil exports, causing crude oil prices to surge past $100 per barrel.

The IEA's release of 400 million barrels is more than double the amount released in 2022 during Russia's invasion of Ukraine, which was then the largest in the agency's history. This move is intended to stabilize global energy markets and mitigate the economic impact of the conflict.

Despite this intervention, analysts caution that strategic reserves offer only temporary relief. Oil prices may remain volatile until the conflict is resolved and normal shipping operations through the Strait of Hormuz are restored.
