US Shale Producers Maintain Output Amid Middle East Conflict

As oil prices surge past $100 per barrel amid escalating conflict in the Middle East, US shale producers are maintaining current output levels, emphasizing capital discipline and shareholder returns.

The ongoing US-Israel conflict with Iran has disrupted oil production and shipping routes, notably the Strait of Hormuz, through which about 20% of the world's oil passes daily. Despite these disruptions, US shale companies are not rushing to increase production. Industry leaders have indicated that existing plans for 2026 remain unchanged. ConocoPhillips CEO Ryan Lance stated, "With what we're trying to execute, we don't like to whipsaw these programmes up or down."

Analysts suggest that sustained higher prices across the futures curve are necessary before shale operators consider revising drilling plans. Energy consultancy Enverus analyst Alex Ljubojevic noted, "You need the back end of that curve to increase a lot for there to be a response on the US shale side." Additionally, even with a concerted effort to boost production, bringing additional supply online would require several months due to drilling, completion, and infrastructure lead times.

The US administration has not called on domestic producers to ramp up output. Instead, it has proposed measures such as insurance backstops and naval escorts to ensure safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz.
