Farrer By-Election Set Following Sussan Ley's Resignation

Résumé

The resignation of former Liberal leader Sussan Ley has triggered a by-election in the New South Wales seat of Farrer, with multiple parties and independents preparing to contest the seat.

Former Liberal leader Sussan Ley has officially resigned from her position as the Member for Farrer, prompting a by-election in the New South Wales electorate. Ley's departure follows her defeat in the Liberal Party leadership spill on February 13, 2026, where Angus Taylor succeeded her as party leader.

The Farrer electorate, encompassing towns such as Albury, Griffith, and Deniliquin, has been a stronghold for the Liberal Party since Ley's initial election in 2001. However, the 2025 federal election saw a significant swing against the Liberals, with Ley's margin reduced to 6.2% over independent candidate Michelle Milthorpe.

Several candidates have declared their intention to contest the upcoming by-election. Independent Michelle Milthorpe, who secured 20% of the primary vote in 2025, has announced her candidacy. Family First is fielding Rebecca Scriven, a school worker who also ran in the previous election. The Greens have confirmed their participation, though their candidate is yet to be announced.

The Nationals have expressed their intent to contest the seat, marking their first bid since 2001. Party Chairman Rick Colless emphasized the Nationals' commitment to representing regional communities, stating, "We will put forward a strong local candidate who will fight for Farrer, stand up for regional communities, and ensure their voices are heard in Canberra."

One Nation is also entering the race, with preselection scheduled for March 7 at the Albury Entertainment Centre. The event will include a public rally where the selected candidate will be introduced.

Additionally, independent state MP Helen Dalton has been approached by One Nation to run for the federal seat. Dalton confirmed discussions with Pauline Hanson and Barnaby Joyce but has not yet made a decision.

The date for the by-election will be set following Ley's formal resignation. The contest is anticipated to be highly competitive, with multiple parties and independents vying for the seat.
