Phil Spencer Retires as Xbox CEO; Asha Sharma Appointed Successor

सारांश

Phil Spencer retires as Xbox CEO after 38 years at Microsoft; Asha Sharma, former CoreAI president, steps in as successor.

Phil Spencer, who has led Xbox for over a decade, is retiring from Microsoft after 38 years with the company. In an email to staff, Spencer stated he had informed Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella last autumn of his intention to step back and begin the next chapter of his life. He will remain in an advisory role through the summer to support a smooth transition.

Asha Sharma, previously President of Microsoft's CoreAI product unit, has been appointed as the new CEO of Microsoft Gaming, effective immediately. Sharma, who joined Microsoft in 2024, has a background in artificial intelligence and has served as Chief Operating Officer at Instacart and Vice President of Product and Engineering at Meta. In her introductory message to staff, Sharma emphasized a commitment to great games, a renewed focus on Xbox's console roots, and the future of play across devices. She stated, "We will not chase short-term efficiency or flood our ecosystem with soulless AI slop. Games are and always will be art, crafted by humans, and created with the most innovative technology provided by us."

Sarah Bond, who joined Xbox in 2017 and became president in 2023, is also leaving the company. Matt Booty, head of Xbox Game Studios, has been promoted to Executive Vice President and Chief Content Officer, continuing to oversee the company's development studios while reporting to Sharma.

These leadership changes come as Microsoft Gaming faces challenges, including a recent 9% decline in quarterly gaming revenue and intensified competition from Sony's PlayStation and Nintendo's Switch. The new leadership team is tasked with stabilizing revenue, strengthening hardware performance, and competing effectively in a rapidly evolving market.
