Asha Sharma Appointed CEO of Microsoft Gaming as Phil Spencer Retires

Résumé

Microsoft appoints Asha Sharma as CEO of its gaming division, succeeding Phil Spencer, who retires after 38 years with the company.

Microsoft has appointed Asha Sharma as Executive Vice President and CEO of Microsoft Gaming, succeeding Phil Spencer, who is retiring after 38 years with the company.

Sharma, who joined Microsoft in 2024, previously served as Chief Operating Officer at Instacart and held leadership roles at Meta. In her new role, she will oversee Xbox, Bethesda, Activision Blizzard, and King.

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella highlighted Sharma's experience in building and scaling services that reach billions of people, stating that her expertise will be critical in leading the gaming business into its next era of growth.

In her message to employees, Sharma emphasized a renewed commitment to Xbox's core fans and players, stating, "We will recommit to our core Xbox fans and players, those who have invested with us for the past 25 years."

She also addressed the role of artificial intelligence in gaming, asserting that while AI will influence the future, the company will not "chase short-term efficiency or flood our ecosystem with soulless AI slop." She emphasized that games are and always will be art, crafted by humans.

Additionally, Matt Booty has been promoted to Executive Vice President and Chief Content Officer, reporting to Sharma. He will oversee nearly 40 gaming studios, including those responsible for franchises such as Halo, The Elder Scrolls, Call of Duty, World of Warcraft, Diablo, Candy Crush, and Fallout.

Phil Spencer will remain in an advisory role through the summer to ensure a smooth transition.
