Amazon Leo to Integrate with Third-Party Antennas via New Modem Module

Résumé

Amazon's satellite internet service, Leo, plans to offer a modem module enabling integration with third-party antennas for enterprise and government clients.

Amazon's satellite internet service, Leo, is set to enhance its flexibility for enterprise and government clients by introducing the Amazon Leo Modem Module (ALMM). This compact, high-performance unit will embed Leo's network intelligence into antennas developed by trusted third-party vendors. According to a recent filing with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), the ALMM will allow customers to integrate Leo's non-geostationary satellite orbit connectivity into existing systems without compromising performance. The module is designed to deliver speeds up to 1 Gbps, offering increased flexibility in manufacturing and design options. By decoupling the modem from the antenna, the ALMM enables faster innovation cycles, easier adaptation to specialized mission requirements, and greater resilience to component obsolescence. The modular design also allows different government agencies or third-party vendors to develop and certify their own antenna systems tailored for size, gain, or environmental hardening, while maintaining compatibility with the Amazon Leo network through the ALMM interface. Amazon has requested the FCC grant blanket-licensed approval to operate the modem module in fixed positions and while in motion, including road vehicles, planes, and ships. The device will be available exclusively to government and enterprise customers, not consumers. This approach may help Amazon build a third-party ecosystem around Leo, potentially reducing costs, accelerating deployment, and enabling customers to build on existing research and manufacturing investments. Currently, Amazon Leo remains in private beta with select enterprise customers, as the company has approximately 210 satellites in orbit. Plans are underway to expand Leo's availability later this year as more satellites are launched.
