Fossil Discovery Reveals Early Plant-Eating Land Vertebrate

A fossil skull estimated to be 307 million years old was discovered in Nova Scotia, Canada. This fossil has been identified as Tyrannoroter heberti, one of the earliest known land vertebrates to have adopted a plant-based diet. The discovery provides evidence that herbivory among terrestrial vertebrates began earlier than previously thought, during the late Carboniferous period. Paleontologists, including Arjan Mann and teams from the Field Museum, analyzed the fossil to reach these conclusions. This finding revises previous understandings of the timeline for the emergence of herbivory in land ecosystems. It contributes to the broader knowledge of vertebrate evolution and highlights an important step in the evolutionary adaptation of land vertebrates to herbivory.
