Israel Eases West Bank Land Purchases for Settlers, Expands Authority Over Palestinian Areas

Résumé

Israel's security cabinet has approved measures facilitating land purchases by settlers in the West Bank and expanding Israeli administrative powers over Palestinian territories, drawing condemnation from Palestinian leaders.

Israel's security cabinet has approved measures to facilitate land purchases by settlers in the occupied West Bank and to expand Israeli administrative authority over Palestinian territories. The new policies include repealing longstanding regulations that restricted Jewish private citizens from buying land in the West Bank. Additionally, Israeli authorities will now oversee certain religious sites and enforce regulations concerning environmental hazards, water offenses, and archaeological site protection in areas previously under Palestinian Authority (PA) administration.

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas condemned the measures as "dangerous, illegal, and tantamount to de-facto annexation." The Israeli ministers responsible for the decision have not yet responded to these criticisms.

These developments occur shortly before Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's scheduled meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump. While President Trump has opposed formal Israeli annexation of the West Bank, his administration has not intervened to halt Israel's accelerated settlement expansion, which Palestinians argue undermines prospects for a future independent state.

The United Nations' highest court issued a non-binding advisory opinion in 2024 stating that Israel's occupation of Palestinian territories and the settlements therein are illegal and should be ended promptly. Israel disputes this interpretation.
