UK Prime Minister's Chief of Staff Resigns Amid Mandelson Appointment Controversy
Morgan McSweeney resigns as Chief of Staff to Prime Minister Keir Starmer, taking responsibility for advising the appointment of Peter Mandelson as U.S. ambassador despite Mandelson's ties to Jeffrey Epstein.
Morgan McSweeney, Chief of Staff to British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, has resigned following controversy over the appointment of Peter Mandelson as the UK's ambassador to the United States. McSweeney acknowledged his role in advising Starmer to appoint Mandelson, stating, "The decision to appoint Peter Mandelson was wrong. He has damaged our party, our country and trust in politics itself."
Mandelson was dismissed from his ambassadorial role in September 2025 after documents revealed his connections with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. Further disclosures indicated that Mandelson shared sensitive government information with Epstein during his tenure as business secretary in 2008.
In his resignation statement, McSweeney emphasized the need for accountability, saying, "When asked, I advised the Prime Minister to make that appointment and I take full responsibility for that advice. In public life responsibility must be owned when it matters most, not just when it is most convenient. In the circumstances, the only honourable course is to step aside."
Prime Minister Starmer expressed gratitude for McSweeney's service, noting his significant contributions to the Labour Party's success.
Opposition leaders have criticized Starmer's judgment. Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch stated, "Keir Starmer has to take responsibility for his own terrible decisions. But he never does."
The resignation has intensified scrutiny over the vetting processes for high-level appointments and raised questions about the Prime Minister's decision-making amid ongoing political challenges.
