NASA's SpaceX Crew-12 Enters Quarantine Ahead of Accelerated ISS Mission

Summary

The four-member Crew-12 team has begun a two-week quarantine as they prepare for an expedited launch to the International Space Station on February 11, following the early return of Crew-11 due to a medical emergency.

NASA's SpaceX Crew-12 astronauts commenced a two-week quarantine on January 28 at the Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas, in preparation for their upcoming mission to the International Space Station (ISS). The crew comprises NASA astronauts Jessica Meir and Jack Hathaway, European Space Agency (ESA) astronaut Sophie Adenot, and Roscosmos cosmonaut Andrey Fedyaev.

Originally scheduled for February 15, the Crew-12 launch has been moved up to February 11 to address a staffing shortage on the ISS caused by the early return of Crew-11 due to a medical emergency. The mission will utilize the SpaceX Dragon spacecraft "Grace," launched atop a Falcon 9 rocket from Cape Canaveral's Launch Complex 40.

The Crew-12 team is set to travel from Houston to NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida on February 6, where they will continue their quarantine and complete final prelaunch activities. Once aboard the ISS, they will join the current Expedition 74 team for a mission expected to last approximately nine months, during which they will support scientific research and international cooperation.

This mission marks the first spaceflight for mission specialist Sophie Adenot and pilot Jack Hathaway, both with test pilot backgrounds. Commander Jessica Meir and mission specialist Andrey Fedyaev are each embarking on their second spaceflight. Notably, Fedyaev will become the first cosmonaut to fly twice on a SpaceX Dragon spacecraft.

NASA's practice of prelaunch quarantine, initiated during the Apollo era, aims to minimize the risk of illness before launch and ensure the health of astronauts during their mission. During this period, contact with others is limited, and most communication occurs remotely. Family members and essential mission personnel must undergo medical screening and receive clearance before any in-person interaction.

Prior to entering quarantine, the Crew-12 astronauts completed a full crew equipment interface test on January 12. This involved suiting up, boarding the SpaceX Dragon spacecraft, performing suit leak checks, and verifying seat fit. They also reviewed the spacecraft's interior layout, tested communication systems, and familiarized themselves with the sounds produced by Dragon's fans and pumps to ensure comfort with the environment they will experience during their journey to the ISS.
