Major Winter Storm to Impact Central and Eastern U.S. with Snow and Ice

A significant winter storm is forecast to impact a large portion of the United States this weekend, bringing heavy snow, sleet, and freezing rain from the southern Rockies and Plains into the Mid-South, before advancing eastward into the Mid-Atlantic and New England regions. The National Weather Service has issued winter storm watches and warnings across multiple states, including Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Tennessee, Kentucky, Ohio, Virginia, West Virginia, Maryland, Pennsylvania, New York, and others.

In the southern Plains and lower Mississippi Valley, freezing rain and sleet are expected to begin on Friday, shifting east into parts of the Southeast, Tennessee Valley, and Mid-Atlantic over the weekend. The National Weather Service warns of "significant and damaging ice accumulations" that could lead to power outages, tree damage, and hazardous travel conditions.

Major cities are preparing for the storm's impact. In New York, snow is anticipated to start on Saturday night, with the heaviest snowfall likely on Sunday into Sunday evening. Forecasts indicate that parts of the New York region could receive between eight and 16 inches of snow.

Governors in several states, including South Carolina, Georgia, Texas, and North Carolina, have declared states of emergency to activate emergency response resources. Other states, such as West Virginia and Maryland, have declared a "state of preparedness" in anticipation of the storm.
