White House and Governors Address AI Data Centers' Impact on Power Grid

Summary

The White House and bipartisan governors are collaborating to mitigate power shortages and price increases caused by AI data centers.

The White House, in collaboration with a bipartisan group of governors, is addressing the escalating power demands and associated price increases linked to artificial intelligence (AI) data centers. A meeting is scheduled for Friday to discuss strategies aimed at enhancing energy supply and stabilizing electricity costs in the mid-Atlantic region.

The National Energy Dominance Council, along with governors from states such as Pennsylvania, Ohio, and Virginia, are advocating for PJM Interconnection, the operator of the mid-Atlantic power grid, to conduct a power auction. This auction would allow technology companies to bid on contracts for the construction of new power plants, thereby increasing energy capacity to meet the growing demands of AI data centers.

Taylor Rogers, a White House spokeswoman, emphasized the administration's commitment to reliable and affordable electricity, stating, "Ensuring the American people have reliable and affordable electricity is one of President Trump's top priorities, and this would deliver much-needed, long-term relief to the mid-Atlantic region."

Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro is expected to attend the meeting. According to a source familiar with his plans, Shapiro's participation is contingent upon including a provision to extend a limit on wholesale electricity price increases for the region's consumers.

PJM Interconnection, however, will not be represented at the event. Spokesperson Jeff Shields confirmed, "PJM was not invited. Therefore we would not attend."

The initiative comes amid growing concerns over the substantial energy consumption of AI data centers and its impact on consumers. Reports indicate that ratepayers in the mid-Atlantic electricity grid—which spans parts of 13 states and Washington, D.C.—are already incurring higher bills to support the power needs of these data centers. Despite these increased costs, there has been insufficient construction of new power plants to meet the rising demand.

As the November elections approach, electricity costs have become a pivotal issue in several states, including New Jersey and Virginia, where communities are grappling with escalating electric bills and debates over the financial responsibilities associated with AI data centers.
