Astronauts Receive Medical Care at Scripps Memorial Hospital After Early Return from ISS
Four astronauts were transported to Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla following an early return from the International Space Station due to a medical concern affecting one crew member.
Four astronauts returned to Earth earlier than planned due to a medical issue affecting one crew member aboard the International Space Station (ISS). The SpaceX Dragon capsule carrying NASA astronauts Zena Cardman and Mike Fincke, Japan's Kimiya Yui, and Russia's Oleg Platonov splashed down in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of San Diego on January 15, 2026.
Following the splashdown, the crew was transported by helicopter to Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla for medical evaluation. This marked the first time a West Coast hospital provided care for astronauts immediately after their return from space.
NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman stated that the early return was prompted by a serious medical condition, emphasizing that the affected astronaut was stable and in good spirits. The specific nature of the medical issue has not been disclosed due to privacy considerations.
The Crew-11 mission, which began on August 1, 2025, was originally scheduled to last until mid-February 2026. During their 167 days in space, the crew completed over 140 experiments and traveled nearly 71 million miles around Earth.
After overnight observation at Scripps Memorial Hospital, the astronauts returned to NASA's Johnson Space Center in Houston for standard postflight evaluations and physical reconditioning.
