NASA Astronaut Mike Fincke Discloses Medical Issue Prompting Early ISS Return
Initially, NASA postponed a scheduled spacewalk aboard the International Space Station (ISS) after a crew member developed a medical issue. The situation was reported as stable, and NASA announced that the spacewalk would be rescheduled at a later date. Subsequently, NASA decided to bring the Crew-11 mission back to Earth ahead of schedule due to the medical concern involving one of the astronauts. This marked the first medical evacuation in the history of the ISS. Four astronauts, including Mike Fincke who was later identified as the affected crew member, returned safely to Earth. After landing in Collegno, Piedmont, Italy, the astronauts received medical care at Scripps Memorial Hospital in La Jolla. NASA astronauts highlighted the critical role of a portable ultrasound device in managing the medical emergency aboard the ISS.
