ICE Agent Fatally Shoots Woman in Minneapolis Amid Immigration Operation

Summary

A 37-year-old woman was fatally shot by an ICE agent in Minneapolis during a federal immigration operation, prompting local officials to question the use of force.

A 37-year-old woman was fatally shot by a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent in Minneapolis on Wednesday during a federal immigration enforcement operation. The incident occurred near East 34th Street and Portland Avenue, where federal agents were conducting activities in the area.

According to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), the woman was inside a vehicle and allegedly attempted to drive toward agents. DHS spokeswoman Tricia McLaughlin stated that the ICE officer fired "defensive shots" after the woman "weaponized her vehicle, attempting to run over our law enforcement officers in an attempt to kill them."

Local officials have raised concerns about the circumstances of the shooting. Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey criticized the federal narrative, stating, "This was an agent recklessly using power that resulted in somebody dying, getting killed."

Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O'Hara reported that local police arrived to find a woman with a gunshot wound to the head. Life-saving measures were performed at the scene before she was transported to Hennepin County Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead. Preliminary information indicates that the woman was in her vehicle, blocking the road on Portland Avenue between 33rd and 34th Streets.

The FBI and the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension are jointly investigating the shooting.
