Swiss Bar Fire Overwhelms Burn Centers, Patients Transferred Abroad
A fire at a Swiss resort bar has overwhelmed local burn centers, leading to patient transfers to neighboring countries.
A devastating fire at Le Constellation bar in Crans-Montana, Switzerland, has resulted in approximately 40 deaths and 115 injuries, many severe. The incident has overwhelmed Switzerland's burn units, prompting the transfer of patients to hospitals in neighboring countries.
Dr. Robert Larribau, head of emergency care at Geneva's University Hospital, stated that the number of severe burn victims far exceeds the capacity of Switzerland's burn units in Zurich and Lausanne, as well as the national disaster center in Bern.
Transfers of patients to hospitals in Germany, Italy, and France began on Thursday. France announced on Friday that 11 injury victims would be hospitalized there.
The hospital in Sion, closest to the fire, was initially overwhelmed, reportedly taking in around 60 people. Twenty-two others were sent to Lausanne, more than double the capacity of its burn center. Another 16 patients were transferred to Zurich University Hospital, and eight were sent to a hospital in Bern.
Four people, aged between 15 and 25, were taken to Geneva University Hospital. Two were in intensive care and required immediate transfer for specialized treatment.
Three individuals suffering fractures and other non-burn injuries from an explosion during the fire made their own way to another Geneva hospital.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation. Authorities have ruled out foul play and are focusing on potential safety lapses.
Crans-Montana, a renowned ski and golf destination, is now grappling with one of the country's worst peacetime tragedies. Officials have cautioned the public against further strain on emergency medical services during the holiday period.
