Saks Global Enterprises Considers Chapter 11 Bankruptcy Amid Financial Struggles
Facing a significant debt payment and ongoing financial challenges, Saks Global Enterprises is exploring Chapter 11 bankruptcy as a potential option.
Saks Global Enterprises, the parent company of luxury retailer Saks Fifth Avenue, is evaluating Chapter 11 bankruptcy as a possible course of action due to financial difficulties and an impending debt payment exceeding $100 million.
The company is also considering alternative strategies to improve liquidity, such as securing emergency financing or divesting assets.
A spokesperson for Saks Global stated, "Together with our key financial stakeholders, we are exploring all potential paths to secure a strong and stable future for Saks Global and advance our transformation while delivering exceptional products, elevated experiences and personalized service to our customers."
In recent months, Saks Global has faced declining sales and operational challenges. In the second quarter, the company reported a 13% decrease in sales to $1.6 billion and a net loss of $288 million, compared to a $271 million loss in the same period the previous year.
To address these issues, Saks Global restructured its $2.2 billion debt in August 2025, securing approximately $600 million in new funding. Despite these efforts, S&P Global Ratings raised the company's credit rating to 'CCC' from 'SD' (selective default) but maintained a negative outlook, citing ongoing liquidity constraints.
The company has also been slow in paying suppliers, with Days Beyond Terms (DBT) data indicating payment delays significantly above the industry average.
Saks Global's financial challenges have been exacerbated by the acquisition of Neiman Marcus in late 2024, which increased its debt burden.
As the company explores various options to stabilize its financial position, the luxury retail industry continues to monitor developments closely.
