Skagit County Faces Historic Flooding; Evacuations Ordered

Skagit County is confronting historic flooding as the Skagit River approaches record levels, leading officials to issue evacuation orders for residents within the 100-year floodplain. The river is projected to crest at 46.13 feet in Concrete and 42.13 feet in Mount Vernon, surpassing previous records set in 2021.

Governor Bob Ferguson has declared a statewide emergency in response to the severe flooding. He emphasized the gravity of the situation, stating, "Lives will be at stake in the coming days."

Residents in affected areas, including upriver communities such as Rockport, Hamilton, Marblemount, and Concrete, have been advised to evacuate to higher ground. The Skagit County Department of Emergency Management has activated the emergency operations center and is coordinating with partner agencies to address the crisis.

The National Weather Service has issued a flood warning for Skagit County, anticipating major flooding from December 10 through December 12. Residents are urged to stay informed and prepare for potential evacuations as the situation develops.
