Massive Fire Engulfs Hong Kong High-Rise Complex, Resulting in Multiple Fatalities
A major fire in Hong Kong's Tai Po district has claimed at least four lives and injured several others, with rescue operations ongoing.
A significant fire erupted on Wednesday afternoon at the Wang Fuk Court residential complex in Hong Kong's Tai Po district, resulting in at least four fatalities and multiple injuries. The blaze, which began around 2:51 p.m. local time, rapidly spread across bamboo scaffolding surrounding the buildings, leading authorities to escalate the alarm level to No. 4 by 3:34 p.m.
The affected complex comprises eight blocks with nearly 2,000 apartments, housing approximately 4,800 residents. Emergency services reported that among the injured, three individuals are in critical condition, and one is in serious condition. The fire also resulted in injuries to several firefighters.
Authorities have closed sections of the Tai Po highway and diverted bus routes to facilitate firefighting efforts and ensure public safety. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation, with concerns raised about the role of bamboo scaffolding in the rapid spread of the flames.
Rescue operations are ongoing, with reports indicating that some residents may still be trapped inside the buildings. The government has opened temporary shelters at nearby community centers and a school to accommodate displaced residents.
