MLB and Sportsbooks Implement Limits on Pitch-Level Bets Amid Integrity Concerns

Summary

Major League Baseball, in collaboration with leading sportsbooks, has introduced a $200 cap on individual pitch bets and excluded them from parlays to address integrity risks following allegations against two Cleveland Guardians pitchers.

Major League Baseball (MLB) and its authorized sportsbook partners have agreed to cap wagers on individual pitch outcomes at $200 and to exclude these bets from parlays. This decision, announced on Monday, aims to mitigate integrity risks associated with pitch-level betting markets.

The move follows the indictment of Cleveland Guardians pitchers Emmanuel Clase and Luis Ortiz, who are accused of accepting bribes to manipulate pitch outcomes, enabling bettors to win approximately $450,000. Both players face charges including wire fraud conspiracy and money laundering conspiracy.

MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred emphasized the league's commitment to game integrity, stating, "Since the Supreme Court decision opened the door to legalized sports betting, Major League Baseball has continuously worked with industry and regulatory stakeholders across the country to uphold our most important priority: protecting the integrity of our games for the fans."

Ohio Governor Mike DeWine praised the initiative, noting, "By limiting the ability to place large wagers on micro-prop bets, Major League Baseball is taking affirmative steps to protect the integrity of the game and reduce the incentives to participate in improper betting schemes."

Leading sportsbook operators, including DraftKings and FanDuel, have adjusted their betting offerings in line with MLB's directives. A DraftKings spokesperson stated, "In collaboration with Major League Baseball, we have adjusted certain bet types to further deter bad actors while helping maintain fairness and trust in the game."

FanDuel President Christian Genetski added, "This initiative illustrates our unwavering commitment to building a legal and regulated market that roots out abuses by those who seek to undermine fair competition and damage the integrity of the games we love."
