Tanzanian Youth Protest Economic Marginalization Amid Unfulfilled Development Promises
On October 29, 2025, Tanzanian youth protested against economic marginalization and unfulfilled development promises, particularly regarding the natural gas sector. These protests occurred amid a disputed presidential election in which President Samia Suluhu Hassan secured a second term with over 97% of the vote. Opposition parties, including Chadema, contested the election results and reported widespread unrest. Following the election, protests erupted nationwide, leading to military deployment, internet shutdowns, and a curfew in Dar es Salaam, which was later lifted. Chadema reported approximately 700 deaths related to the election protests, while Tanzanian authorities charged at least 76 individuals with treason. President Hassan attributed the protests to foreign influence, and international organizations called for restraint and investigations into the violence. The unrest highlighted deep frustrations over political exclusion and economic issues among Tanzanian youth.
