OpenAI and Jony Ive's 'io' Brand Removed Amid Trademark Dispute; AI Hardware Collaboration Continues

Résumé

OpenAI has removed references to 'io' from its platforms due to a trademark lawsuit, but the AI hardware collaboration with Jony Ive continues.

OpenAI has removed references to 'io,' the hardware startup co-founded by former Apple designer Jony Ive, from its website and social media channels. This action follows a trademark lawsuit filed by Iyo, a hearing device startup associated with Google's moonshot factory. Despite the removal of 'io' branding, OpenAI confirms that its acquisition of the startup, valued at approximately $6.5 billion, is proceeding as planned. The original announcement, including a blog post and a nine-minute video featuring Ive and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, has been taken down. OpenAI spokesperson Kayla Wood stated, 'This page is temporarily down due to a court order following a trademark complaint from Iyo about our use of the name 'io.' We don't agree with the complaint and are reviewing our options.'
