Federal Judge Orders Border Patrol to Provide Use-of-Force Reports Amid Concerns Over Tactics in Chicago
U.S. District Judge Sara Ellis has mandated that Border Patrol Chief Gregory Bovino submit all use-of-force reports and body camera footage following allegations of aggressive tactics during immigration enforcement in Chicago.
U.S. District Judge Sara Ellis has directed Border Patrol Chief Gregory Bovino to provide all use-of-force reports since September 2 and corresponding body-worn camera footage by the end of the week. This order comes amid concerns over the agency's tactics during immigration enforcement operations in Chicago.
During a recent court session, Judge Ellis emphasized the necessity of issuing warnings before deploying tear gas, highlighting an incident where children in Halloween costumes were affected. She stated, "That was the instance, as well, where children were present and they were dressed up in their Halloween costumes. ... Those kids were tear gassed on their way to celebrate Halloween in their local school parking lot."
Bovino acknowledged the judge's directives and agreed to ensure that all agents involved in Operation Midway Blitz are equipped with body-worn cameras. He also committed to displaying identifying numbers conspicuously on agents' uniforms to enhance accountability.
Judge Ellis has scheduled daily meetings with Bovino to monitor compliance, underscoring the court's commitment to overseeing federal enforcement activities in the city.
