Federal Agents Deploy Tear Gas During Immigration Raids in Chicago's Lakeview Neighborhood

Federal agents conducted immigration enforcement operations in Chicago's Lakeview neighborhood on Friday, detaining multiple individuals and deploying tear gas against protesting residents. The actions are part of the ongoing "Operation Midway Blitz," which has intensified immigration enforcement across the city.
Around noon, agents entered a residential property on North Lakewood Avenue, detaining a construction worker. Witnesses reported that two other workers fled and hid. As agents attempted to remove the detained individual over a spiked fence, a neighbor intervened to open the gate. More than 50 residents followed the agents' unmarked vehicles, expressing their disapproval. During the confrontation, an agent deployed a tear gas canister toward the crowd, causing residents to disperse.
Earlier that morning, agents conducted random stops in West Town and Wicker Park, detaining at least two individuals. These actions appear to deviate from the stated mission of targeting high-priority criminal undocumented immigrants.
Alderman Bennett Lawson (44th Ward) commented on the day's events, stating, "It hit home more today than it has recently. Other areas have been a bigger target, but I think our community has been watching this and have been preparing." He also praised the community's response, saying, "I'm proud of the neighbors who stood up for our community member here, and the outrage that they feel is showed by everyone in the community."
The use of tear gas by federal agents has raised concerns about potential violations of a federal judge's temporary restraining order, which limits the use of such tactics against protesters and requires warnings before deployment. Videos from the incident do not indicate that agents issued warnings prior to using tear gas.
These events mark a significant escalation in federal immigration enforcement in Chicago's North Side neighborhoods, prompting discussions about the balance between law enforcement actions and community relations.
