New York GOP Suspends Young Republicans Chapter Over Racist Chat Messages
The New York Republican State Committee has suspended its Young Republicans chapter following the release of racist and antisemitic messages exchanged among its members.
The New York Republican State Committee has suspended the authorization of its Young Republicans chapter after the emergence of racist and antisemitic messages exchanged among its members. The decision followed a unanimous vote by the committee's executive board.
"The Young Republicans was already grossly mismanaged, and vile language of the sort made in the group chat has no place in our party or its subsidiary organizations," said New York Republican Chair Ed Cox.
The suspension comes in response to a Politico report that revealed approximately 2,900 pages of leaked messages from a Telegram group involving Young Republican leaders from New York and other states. The messages contained offensive language, including praise for Adolf Hitler and derogatory remarks about various groups.
In the aftermath, several individuals implicated in the chat have faced professional consequences. Peter Giunta, former chair of the New York State Young Republicans, was dismissed from his role as chief of staff to Assemblymember Mike Reilly. Bobby Walker, the current chair, is reportedly no longer involved in State Senator Peter Oberacker's congressional campaign.
The Kansas Republican Party has also taken action by disbanding its Young Republicans organization. Chair Danedri Herbert stated that the comments "do not reflect the beliefs of Republicans and certainly not Kansas Republicans at large."
The Young Republican National Federation has called for the immediate resignation of those involved, emphasizing that such behavior is "disgraceful, unbecoming of any Republican, and stands in direct opposition to the values our movement represents."
New York Governor Kathy Hochul condemned the messages, urging Republican leaders to take decisive action against those responsible. She highlighted the need for accountability and criticized any attempts to downplay the severity of the situation.
The New York Republican State Committee has indicated that the Young Republicans chapter may be reconstituted in the future with new leadership, aiming to uphold the party's standards and values.
