Mass Evacuations Underway in Western Alaska Following Devastating Storm

Summary

Hundreds of residents from Kipnuk and Kwigillingok are being airlifted to safety after a severe storm rendered their homes uninhabitable.

In response to the catastrophic storm that struck Western Alaska over the weekend, mass evacuations are underway in the villages of Kipnuk and Kwigillingok. The storm, identified as the remnants of Typhoon Halong, caused extensive damage, leaving homes uninhabitable and utilities inoperable.

The Alaska National Guard, in coordination with other agencies, has initiated one of the most significant airlift efforts in recent Alaska disaster response history. Over 300 residents are being transported from their villages to shelters in Bethel and Anchorage. The University of Alaska Anchorage's Alaska Airlines Center is set to accommodate 300 displaced individuals, providing beds, food, emergency relief supplies, emotional support, and health services.

The storm has resulted in at least one confirmed fatality and two individuals missing in Kwigillingok. Alaska State Troopers reported that three family members were last seen in a house that broke loose and floated toward the Bering Sea amid record tidal surges. The body of 67-year-old Ella Mae Kashatok was recovered, while Vernon Pavil, 71, and Chester Kashatok, 41, remain missing.

In Kipnuk, a community of approximately 700 residents, nearly all homes sustained damage. As many as 600 residents sought shelter in the local school, which is now deemed unsafe. Evacuees are being transported using large Black Hawk helicopters and smaller private planes.

State officials are coordinating with local communities, tribal organizations, the Yukon-Kuskokwim Health Corporation, and the Association of Village Council Presidents to provide immediate and long-term shelter solutions. Efforts are also underway to assess and repair damaged infrastructure before winter sets in.
