Explosion at Tennessee Explosives Plant Results in Multiple Fatalities and Missing Persons
An explosion at Accurate Energetic Systems in McEwen, Tennessee, has resulted in multiple fatalities and several individuals unaccounted for, with authorities continuing search and rescue operations.
An explosion occurred Friday morning at Accurate Energetic Systems, an explosives manufacturing plant in McEwen, Tennessee, approximately 50 miles west of Nashville. Humphreys County Sheriff Chris Davis confirmed multiple fatalities and stated that several individuals remain unaccounted for.
"We do have some folks, we can confirm that we do have some that are deceased," Davis said during a press update Friday afternoon.
The explosion took place at 7:48 a.m. local time, destroying one of the facility's buildings. Emergency responders, including the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, Homeland Security, and the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation, are on-site. The cause of the explosion is under investigation.
Accurate Energetic Systems specializes in manufacturing explosives and energetic devices for the military, aerospace, demolition, and mining industries.
Residents in nearby areas reported feeling the impact of the blast. Lauren Roark, who lives several miles from the plant, said, "It felt like our house had some kind of explosion."
Authorities are urging the public to avoid the area to allow emergency responders to work safely and efficiently.
