An explosion occurred at Accurate Energetic Systems, an explosives manufacturing facility in McEwen, Tennessee, on Friday morning, resulting in multiple fatalities and several individuals unaccounted for, according to local authorities.
Humphreys County Sheriff Chris Davis confirmed the incident, stating, "We do have several people at this time unaccounted for. We are trying to be mindful of families and that situation. We do have some that are deceased."
The explosion took place around 7:45 a.m. local time at the plant, which specializes in the development and manufacture of explosives for military, aerospace, and commercial demolition markets.
Emergency responders faced challenges accessing the site due to ongoing secondary explosions. Hickman County Advanced EMT David Stewart noted that crews were initially unable to enter the plant because of continuing detonations.
Residents in the vicinity reported feeling the impact of the blast. Gentry Stover, who lives nearby, recounted, "I thought the house had collapsed with me inside of it. I live very close to Accurate and I realized about 30 seconds after I woke up that it had to have been that."
Authorities have urged the public to avoid the area to allow emergency services to manage the situation effectively. The cause of the explosion is currently under investigation.
