A shooting in downtown Montgomery, Alabama, late Saturday night resulted in two fatalities and twelve injuries, including juveniles, as rival groups exchanged gunfire in a crowded area. Montgomery Police Chief James Graboys identified the deceased as 17-year-old Jeremiah Morris and 43-year-old Shalonda Williams. Five of the injured sustained life-threatening injuries, while the remaining seven had non-life-threatening injuries. The youngest victim was 16, with seven victims under the age of 20.
The incident occurred around 11:30 p.m. in a bustling nightlife district. Chief Graboys described it as a "mass shooting" involving two parties shooting at each other amidst a crowd. He emphasized that the shooters "did not care about the people around them when they did it." Investigators are reviewing evidence and interviewing potential suspects, though no arrests have been made as of early Sunday. Mayor Steven Reed stated that the shooting was unrelated to the weekend's sporting and community events, including a football game between Tuskegee University and Morehouse College and the Alabama National Fair. He pledged to find and arrest those responsible, asserting, "For us, this is not acceptable. We're not going to normalize this." Authorities recovered shell casings from multiple weapons at the scene and believe at least two individuals were armed during the incident.
