Browns confirm Deshaun Watson will start in Week 2 against Buccaneers

Résumé

Coach Todd Monken said the Cleveland Browns will keep Deshaun Watson as their starting quarterback for the upcoming game against Tampa Bay, despite a poor offensive showing in the season opener.

Cleveland head coach Todd Monken announced on Monday that Deshaun Watson will remain the team’s starting quarterback for Sunday’s matchup with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Watson, who returned to the field after a 23-month absence, led the Browns to just 10 points in a 34-10 loss to Jacksonville on opening day. He threw an early interception and the offense managed only five first downs in the first half, but Monken did not replace him and Watson later connected on a fourth-quarter touchdown pass.

Monken said the decision was based on his review of the game tape, noting that Watson did not play tentatively despite the early turnover. “I liked his week of practice last week, and I think he’s only gonna continue to get better,” the coach said.

Watson completed 16 of 22 passes for 205 yards, one touchdown and one interception, and was sacked five times. The Browns trailed 34-3 after three quarters but generated 145 of their 272 total yards in the fourth quarter. The quarterback’s performance follows a season-opening loss in which the team’s offense struggled to move the ball.

Monken emphasized that his choice reflects a belief that Watson gives the Browns the best chance to advance the ball and score points, a view he said remains unchanged despite the Jacksonville result. The decision comes as the Browns prepare for their second consecutive road game.
